PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Marie Luise Huber
Principal
German Language Studies
My formal sutdies of German commenced in secondary school, to year 12 level. With further study at the Goethe Institute, Melbourne, I successfully completed my examinations to meet the standards of the Goethe Institute, Munich, for the Zertifikat Deutsch als Fremdsprache (ZDaF) and the Zentrale Mittelstufenpruefung (ZMP).
Practical experience in spoken German was consolidated during two extended stays in Germany, firstly in 1987, then in 1992.
Technical Training and Experience
I graduated from the University of Sydney in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Chemistry. From there, I embarked upon a career in science, initially in the research laboratories of CSIRO, and then of a private chemical company, later followed by a transition to intellectual property law. I first became registered as an Australian and New Zealand Trade Mark Attorney in 1999 and am a current member of the Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia (IPTA).
Translation Experience
It was during my years working as a chemist in the research environment that I began to undertake translation work in a formal capacity alongside my research work. Translation of patents, legal and business correspondence, and scientific and other prior art material were all part of my responsibility during my 10+ years of employment with one of the leading and largest firms of Australian and New Zealand Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys and Lawyers.
I am a current member of the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT), with over 16 years' experience in the translation of scientific and technical literature, patents (especially of chemical subject matter), as well as of legal and business correspondence.
